Mesalazine Similar medicine
If you have mild to moderate kidney or liver problems, your doctor will check your blood (serum creatinine) before starting treatment, every 3 months during the first year, every 6 months for the next 4 years, then once a year after that. Special care is needed for elderly people, those with active stomach ulcers, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and anyone at risk of heart inflammation.
Tell your doctor right away if you notice any unusual bleeding, bruising, purple spots on your skin, a sore throat, fever, or if you feel generally unwell during treatment. Your doctor will do regular blood tests and will stop the treatment if blood problems are suspected.
If you take delayed-release tablets, let your doctor know if you ever see whole or partly broken tablets in your stool. Also, if you have narrowing of the stomach (pyloric stenosis), the medicine might be delayed in reaching your colon.
Do not take this medicine with lactulose or other drugs that lower stomach pH because they can stop mesalazine from being released properly. It may also reduce how much digoxin your body absorbs.
Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to mesalazine, salicylates, or sulfasalazine. It should also not be used if you have serious kidney problems (creatinine clearance less than 20 ml/min) or severe liver problems. This medicine is not for children.
Mesalazine is the main active part of sulfasalazine. Although we aren’t sure exactly how it works, it likely helps by blocking certain chemicals that cause inflammation, especially by stopping leukotriene production in the lining of the gut. It mostly works locally in the last part of the small intestine and the colon, rather than throughout the whole body.
