Drug Interactions
May reduce the blood pressure-lowering effect and increase the risk of kidney damage if taken with NSAIDs. Can raise lithium levels in the blood and cause toxicity. There is a higher risk of high potassium levels (hyperkalaemia) if used with potassium-sparing diuretics (like amiloride, triamterene, or spironolactone), potassium supplements, or salt substitutes containing potassium.
**Serious Risk:** Using with aliskiren in patients who have diabetes or kidney problems (low GFR) can cause dangerous kidney damage, high potassium, and low blood pressure.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity; pregnancy and lactation.
Mode of actions
Irbesartan is a medicine that works by blocking a chemical in the body called angiotensin II. By attaching to AT1 receptors, it stops angiotensin II from narrowing blood vessels and causing the body to release aldosterone. This helps blood vessels stay relaxed and lowers blood pressure.
Dosage & Administration
Adult: PO HTN; Diabetic nephropathy in Type 2 DM 150 mg once daily, up to 300 mg once daily if needed.
Pregnancy & Lactation
This medicine is not allowed during pregnancy. Do not use it if you are pregnant. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict effective birth control during treatment and for six months after stopping this medicine. If you do become pregnant, stop taking this medicine and discuss your doctor right away.
There is no specific information on whether this medicine passes into breast milk or not. Considering the possible risks for the children, breastfeeding while using this medicine is not recommended and at least two weeks after the last dose. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
