Use with caution in patients with seizure disorders; serious liver, kidney, heart, or lung disease; those who need to stay mentally alert; elderly people (especially with dementia) and weak or frail individuals. Neuroleptic medicines that cause drowsiness should be stopped gradually. Be careful if you have a history of angle-closure glaucoma, trouble urinating, enlarged prostate, breast cancer, prolactin-dependent tumors, Parkinson’s disease, or myasthenia gravis. Use carefully during pregnancy. Avoid direct sunlight.
This medication can increase the side effects of other drugs with antimuscarinic effects, such as tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). It can also make levodopa less effective. When taken with dopamine-blocking drugs like metoclopramide and prochlorperazine, it can worsen movement-related side effects.
Serious Risk: This drug can strongly increase the effects on the brain (CNS) when taken with alcohol, general anesthetics, sleeping pills, anxiety medicines, and opioids, which can be dangerous. It also reduces the blood pressure-lowering effect of guanethidine.
**Do not use for people who are extremely sensitive, overly excitable, have mania, porphyria, are in a coma, already have depression of the central nervous system (CNS), bone marrow suppression, or pheochromocytoma. It should also not be used during breastfeeding.**
Flupentixol is a type of antipsychotic medicine from the thioxanthene group. It works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain, which reduces the effects of dopamine and helps to control symptoms of psychosis.
Adult: PO Psychoses Initial: 3-9 mg twice daily. Max: 18 mg/day. Depression Initial: 1 mg/day, increase to 2 mg/day after 1 wk, then to 3 mg/day. Max: 3 mg/day.
IM Psychoses As decanoate: Initial: 20 mg as a test dose. After at least 7 days and depending on response: Subsequent doses of 20-40 mg may be given 2-4 wkly. Usual maintenance: 50 mg 4 wkly to 300 mg 2 wkly, up to 400 mg/wk in severe cases.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
