Precautions and warnings

If you have a decreased peristalsis, you should take it within 1 hour of eating. To prevent ipecac adsorption, induce vomiting before administering charcoal. Ingestions of petroleum distillate or caustic may cause damage to the gastric lining when vomiting is induced with charcoal. To avoid fluid and electrolyte loss, keep the amount of charcoal in sorbitol dosages to a minimum. Before using charcoal, listen for lively bowel sounds. Pregnancy.

Drug Interactions

Decreases absorption of most drugs from GI tract. Decreases effectiveness of methionine through adsorption. Decreases ipecac impact.

Mode of actions

Charcoal limits the GI absorption of hazardous chemicals or irritants such as aromatic or benzenoid-type compounds through adsorption due to its wide surface area. Sorbitol, when used as a laxative, creates a hyperosmotic environment, resulting in catharsis. Furthermore, charcoal disrupts the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids, lowering cholesterol levels.
