Precautions and warnings

Be cautious when giving this medicine to patients at risk of too much iron in their bodies, such as those with haemochromatosis, haemolytic anemia, or red cell aplasia. Iron can bind with tetracycline, which may reduce how well the body absorbs it.

Contraindications

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Folic acid should not be used if you have a vitamin B12 (cobalamin) deficiency that has not been treated.

Mode of actions

Ferrous ascorbate is a man-made combination of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and iron. It forms a stable bond, so the iron and ascorbic acid stay together as they move through the digestive system. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) helps move iron from the blood into storage places in the body and also helps the body use iron better. Because the iron and vitamin C are tightly bound, the iron is not affected by substances in food that normally block iron absorption. Vitamin C also keeps iron in a form that is easy for the body to use by preventing it from turning into a less soluble type.

**Iron** is important for making hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The body also needs iron for making certain enzymes, including those involved in energy production. Iron must be replaced regularly because it is used in hemoglobin, muscle proteins (myoglobin), and enzymes.

**Folic acid**, a type of B-vitamin, is needed to make DNA and for healthy production of red blood cells. The body turns folic acid into its active form, tetrahydrofolic acid, mainly in the liver and blood. It is especially important for women who could become pregnant, as it prevents birth defects, and the need for it goes up during pregnancy.

**Zinc** is required for more than 100 enzymes in the body. It helps make DNA, supports a strong immune system, and is important for a sense of taste and smell. Zinc may also help insulin work properly.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: 1-2 capsule daily or as directed by the physician.
Child: Over 1 year: 1 capsule daily.

Pregnancy & Lactation

FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.

Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.

If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.


There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
