Tobramycin works by attaching to the 30S part of bacterial ribosomes, which stops the bacteria from making proteins they need to survive. It is effective against many types of bacteria that need oxygen to grow, especially gram-negative ones, and some gram-positive bacteria. However, it does not work against Chlamydia, fungi, viruses, or most bacteria that grow without oxygen (anaerobic bacteria).
