Use caution when giving this medication to the following groups:
- Children, teenagers, and elderly people
- People with a history of adrenal suppression or infections
- Anyone with tuberculosis (TB) or steroid muscle weakness
- Those with high blood pressure, recent heart attack, heart failure, liver or kidney problems
- People with diabetes or glaucoma (including family history of these)
- Those with osteoporosis, risk of corneal perforation (eye injury), or peptic ulcers
- People with severe mood disorders, epilepsy, or thyroid problems
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
Some common medicines that can interact or affect how other drugs work include: antacids, ACE inhibitors, acetazolamide, medications for diabetes, aspirin, barbiturates, beta-blockers, calcium-channel blockers, carbamazepine, cardiac glycosides, clonidine, blood thinners (coumarins), diazoxide, various diuretics, erythromycin, hydralazine, ketoconazole, methotrexate, methyldopa, mifepristone, minoxidil, moxonidine, nitrates, nitroprusside, NSAIDs (like ibuprofen), estrogens, phenytoin, primidone, rifamycins, ritonavir, growth hormone (somatropin), certain asthma drugs (beta-2 sympathomimetics), theophylline, and vaccines.
Live virus vaccines should not be given to people with systemic infections or to those taking immunosuppressive medications.
Deflazacort is a type of corticosteroid that comes from prednisolone and mostly works as a glucocorticoid. A 6 mg dose of deflazacort has the same anti-inflammatory effect as 5 mg of prednisolone.
Oral
Allergic and inflammatory disorders
Adult: Initially, up to 120 mg daily. Maintenance: 3-18 mg/day.
Child: 0.25-1.5 mg/kg/day given on alternate days.
Hepatic impairment: Dose reductions may be needed.
FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.
Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.
If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.
There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
