Older adults, people with glaucoma, epilepsy, heart problems, liver issues, asthma, difficulty urinating, enlarged prostate, or a blockage in the stomach or intestines should use caution with this medication. It may cause drowsiness. If given by injection, the drug must be given slowly and carefully, because injecting it the wrong way can cause serious damage to the tissues.
This medicine can hide the ear-damaging (ototoxic) side effects of aminoglycoside antibiotics. It can also increase the drowsiness caused by drugs that slow down the brain, such as alcohol, sleeping pills, barbiturates, and opioids.
Warning: Taking this medicine with other drugs that prolong the QT interval may cause dangerous heart rhythm problems.
Do not use if you have: allergies to the medicine, are in a coma, have porphyria, heart problems, low potassium (hypokalaemia), or if the injection is to be given into an artery or under the skin (subcutaneous).
Promethazine is a type of medication known as a phenothiazine. It works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain and also has a strong ability to block alpha-adrenergic receptors. In addition, it competes with histamine for H1-receptors.
Oral
Nausea and vomiting
Adult: As teoclate: 25 mg at night, may be increased to 50 or 75 mg at night or to 25 mg bid/tid, if needed. Max: 100 mg daily.
Child: As teoclate: 5-10 yr: 12.5-37.5 mg daily.
Renal impairment: Dose reduction may be required.
Prophylaxis of motion sickness
Adult: As teoclate: 25 mg at night or 25 mg 1-2 hr before travelling.
Child: As teoclate: 5-10 yr: 12.5 mg daily starting either on the night before long journeys or 1-2 hr before short journeys.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
