Special care is needed for patients at risk of having too much iron in their bodies, such as those with haemochromatosis, haemolytic anemia, or red cell aplasia. Iron can combine with tetracycline, which may make it harder for the body to absorb the medication.
**Carbonyl iron:**
Taking antacids can reduce how much carbonyl iron your body absorbs.
**Folic acid:**
Certain medications—like antiepileptics, birth control pills, tuberculosis drugs, alcohol, aminopterin, methotrexate, pyrimethamine, trimethoprim, and sulfonamides—can lower the amount of folic acid in your blood. Folic acid can also lower the amount of phenytoin (a type of antiepileptic drug) in the blood.

Iron:
Iron is a key part of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. Having enough iron is necessary for making healthy red blood cells. Iron also helps important enzymes work, including cytochromes, which are involved in the cell’s energy production. Iron is stored in hemoglobin, myoglobin (in muscles), and enzymes, and helps transport oxygen throughout the body.
Folic Acid:
Folic acid is needed to make DNA and for healthy production of red blood cells. In the body, mainly in the liver and blood, it is changed into its active form (tetrahydrofolic acid) with the help of an enzyme called dihydrofolate reductase. Folic acid also helps prevent birth defects of the brain and spine in babies, so women planning to become pregnant should get enough folic acid, and higher amounts are needed during pregnancy.
