Oxyphenonium is a type of anticholinergic medicine. It works by blocking muscarinic (cholinergic) receptors found in smooth and heart muscles, stopping the action of a chemical called acetylcholine. When acetylcholine is blocked, the smooth muscles relax, which helps to stop muscle spasms, such as those in irritable bowel syndrome.
Oxyphenonium also relaxes smooth muscles directly. It slows down movement in the digestive system, lowers stomach acid production, and helps control secretions in the airways and throat. Additionally, it has some effect on blocking signals at nerve junctions (nicotinic blocking activity), which interferes with the transmission of nerve signals. Oxyphenonium does not easily cross the blood-brain barrier, so it does not usually cause effects in the brain or central nervous system.
Adults: 1-2 tablets 3-4 times daily.
Children: 1/2-1 tablet 1-3 times daily.
