Precautions and warnings
Asthmatic patients, history of bronchospasm, peptic ulceration. Pregnancy, lactation.
Side-effects
- Flushing

- rhinorrhoea
- bronchospasm
- anaphylactoid reactions
- rashes. Rarely
- blurred vision
- bradycardia
- syncope
- thrombocytopenia
- convulsions. Potentially Fatal: Rarely
- respiratory or cardiac arrest.
Drug Interactions
Drug stability and safety of acetylcysteine when mixed with other drugs in a nebulizer have not been established.
Contraindications
Acetylcysteine is contraindicated in those patients who are sensitive to it.
Mode of actions
By breaking disulphide bonds in mucoproteins, acetylcysteine may reduce the viscosity of secretions. It also aids in the detoxification of a paracetamol intermediate metabolite that is used to treat paracetamol overdose.
Dosage & Administration
Oral
As a mucolytic
Adult: As effervescent granules or tablets: 200 mg tid.
Child: As effervescent granules or tablets: 2-7 yr: 200 mg bid;
Pregnancy & Lactation
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect even sometimes unable to demonstrate the risk on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required.

There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. Discuss with your doctor before breastfeeding.
