Precautions and warnings

Sulfonamide hypersensitivity. Renal impairment, either hepatic or moderate-to-severe. When used in patients with a history of seizures, use with caution. It's possible that it'll raise your blood pressure a lot. It's possible that it'll make your children sleepy.

Drug Interactions

When used with SSRIs or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, there is a higher risk of serotonin syndrome. When used with verapamil, ketoconazole, or other CYP450 inhibitors, plasma concentrations rise.

When taken within 24 hours of treatment with another 5-HT1 agonist, or an ergotamine-containing or ergot-like medicine, severe vasospastic responses can ensue. Avoid using it if you're on an MAOI or if you've just stopped taking one.

Contraindications

Ischemic heart disease or coronary artery vasospasm are examples of underlying CV disease. Hypertension that is uncontrolled. Hepatic or renal failure is severe. Migraine prophylaxis, hemiplegic or basilar migraine prophylaxis; cluster headache prophylaxis Use within 24 hours of another 5-HT1 agonist; use within 24 hours of an ergotamine derivative; concurrent use or 2 weeks after stopping an MAOI.

Mode of actions

Almotriptan is a selective serotonin agonist that causes cranial vasodilation by acting primarily on the 5-HT1 receptors. It is used to treat migraines in the acute stage.

Dosage & Administration

Oral
Acute migraine attacks
Adult: Initially, 6.25-12.5 mg. May repeat 2 hr later if needed. Max: 2 doses/24 hr.
Hepatic impairment: Initially, 6.25 mg as a single dose. Max: 12.5 mg/24 hr. Avoid in severe impairment.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
