Precautions and warnings

If you have any of the following health issues, you should be careful about taking vitamin D supplements:

- High levels of calcium or phosphorus in your blood
- Heart problems
- Kidney disease

When taking vitamin D, it’s also important to get enough calcium and magnesium. If your body doesn’t have enough vitamin D and calcium, your parathyroid gland makes more PTH (parathyroid hormone). This hormone causes your body to produce more vitamin D and takes calcium from your bones to use for other important functions, like balancing the body’s acidity.

Side-effects

  • Generally all nutritional supplements are considered to be safe
  • well tolerable. However
  • few side-effects can generally occur including hypercalcaemia syndrome or Calcium intoxication (depending on the severity
  • duration of hypercalcaemia)
  • occasional acute symptoms include anorexia
  • headache
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • abdominal pain or stomach ache
  • constipation with the administration of Colecaciferol.

Drug Interactions

Taking vitamin D with thiazide diuretics, calcium, or phosphate can increase the risk of high calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcaemia). Some anti-epileptic medicines (like carbamazepine, phenobarbitone, phenytoin, and primidone) can mean you may need more vitamin D. Medicines such as rifampicin and isoniazid may make vitamin D less effective. Corticosteroids can block vitamin D’s effects. Be careful if you take digoxin or any other heart medicines called cardiac glycosides. Some medicines—like cholestyramine, colestipol, mineral oil, or orlistat—can reduce how much vitamin D your body absorbs. Ketoconazole can also affect vitamin D.

Contraindications

Colecalciferol should not be used in people with any condition that causes high calcium levels in the blood. It should also be avoided by anyone who is allergic to colecalciferol, other similar medicines, or any of the ingredients in its formulation. Colecalciferol must not be taken if there are signs of vitamin D overdose.

Mode of actions

Vitamin D3 is a type of fat-soluble nutrient. It helps control the balance of calcium and phosphate in the body, which is important for keeping bones healthy and strong. Vitamin D3 also helps the body absorb calcium from the digestive system and supports the formation of new bone.
