Precautions and warnings

Tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have renal disease or stomach/intestinal problems.

Ceftazidime may impair the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccinations such as the typhoid vaccine. Before getting any immunizations or vaccinations, tell your doctor if you're taking ceftazidime.

Drug Interactions

Aminoglycosides' nephrotoxicity may be increased. BCG, typhoid vaccination, and Na picosulfate may have a reduced therapeutic efficacy. Vitamin K antagonists' anticoagulant impact may be enhanced (for example, warfarin). Along with probenecid, it's possible that serum levels will rise.

Contraindications

Avoid this medicine if you have hypersensitivity to the active ingredient to cephalosporins.

Mode of actions

Ceftazidime binds to one or more penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which inhibits the last transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan production in the bacterial cell wall, halting biosynthesis and causing bacterial cell death.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: The adult dosage range for ceftazidime is 1 to 6 gm per day 8 or 12 hourly (IM/IV) in the majority of infections, 1 gm 8 hourly or 2 gm 12 hourly should be given.

In urinary tract infections and many less serious infections, 500 mg or 1 gm 12 hourly is usually adequate.

In severe infections, especially immunocompromised patients, including those with neutropenia, 2 gm 8 or 12 hourly should be administered. When used as a prophylactic agent in prostatic surgery 1gm should be given at the induction of anesthesia. A second dose should be considered at the time of catheter removal.

Neonates (0 - 2 months): 25-60 mg/kg/day IV Q 12h
Infants & Children (2 months - 12 years): 30-100 mg/kg/day IV to a maximum of 6 grams per day Q 8-12h.

Elderly: Max dose: 3 g daily.
Renal impairment: Loading dose: 1 g; maintenance doses based on CrCl. May need to increase doses by 50% in severe infections. Peritoneal dialysis: Loading dose is followed by 500 mg every 24 hr; may add ceftazidime to the dialysis fluid (usually 125-250 mg for 2 litres of dialysis fluid). Haemodialysis: Admin loading dose then 0.5-1 g after each dialysis period.

CrCl (ml/min)
31-50 1 g every 12 hr.
16-30 1 g every 24 hr.
6-15 500 mg every 24 hr.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect even sometimes unable to demonstrate the risk on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required.
