Cephalexin may impair the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccinations such as the typhoid vaccine. Before getting any immunizations or vaccinations, inform your doctor that you are taking cephalexin.

Side-effects

Drug Interactions

Lactic acidosis can be lethal if used concurrently with metfromin.

Vitamin K antagonists' anticoagulant impact may be enhanced (for example, warfarin). Potent diuretics (for example, ethacrynic acid, furosemide) and other potentially nephrotoxic antibiotics increase the risk of nephrotoxicity (for example, aminoglycosides, polymyxin, colistin).

When oral anticoagulants and prothrombin time are used together, the prothrombin time may be prolonged.

Contraindications

Avoid this medicine if you have hypersensitivity to the active ingredient to cephalosporins.

Mode of actions

Cefalexin binds to one or more penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which inhibits the last transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan formation in the bacterial cell wall, halting biosynthesis and causing bacterial cell death.

Dosage & Administration

Adults
1 to 4 g/day in divided doses. Usual dose is 250 mg every 6 hours.
Streptococcal pharyngitis, skin and skin structure infections, uncomplicated cystitis in patients>15 years 500 mg every 12 hours. May need larger doses for more severe infections or less susceptible organisms.

Children
25 to 50 mg/kg/day in divided doses. For streptococcal pharyngitis in patients >1year old and for skin and skin structure infections, divide total daily dose and give every 12 hours. In sever infections, double the dose.
Otitis media: 75 to 100 mg/kg/day in 4 divided doses.
beta-hemolytic streptococcal infections: Continue treatment for at least 10 days.

Renal impairment:
CrCl (ml/min)
40-50 Max: 3 g daily.
10-40 Max: 1.5 g daily.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect even sometimes unable to demonstrate the risk on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required.
