Actifed is indicated for

Precautions and warnings

It can make you drowsy and make it difficult to perform well on auditory vigilance exams. It could also affect the patient's ability to drive and operate machinery. As a result, driving and using machinery should be avoided while on Aquaphen therapy. Although there are no objective facts, avoid using alcohol or other centrally acting sedatives at the same time.

Patients with hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, high intraocular pressure, and prostatic enlargement should use cautiously, as with other sympathomimetic medications. Unless advised by a physician, it should not be used for persistent or chronic cough, such as that caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema, or cough that is accompanied by copious secretions.

Side-effects

Drug Interactions

Antihistamines applied to the skin such as diphenhydramine cream, ointment, or spray, and blood pressure drugs are some of the products that may interact with this drug especially guanethidine, methyldopa, beta blockers such as atenolol, or calcium channel blockers such as nifedipine.

When MAO inhibitors are used with this medication, a significant (potentially fatal) drug interaction can occur. During treatment with this medication, do not take MAO inhibitors (isocarboxazid, linezolid, metaxalone, methylene blue, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, safinamide, selegiline, tranylcypromine). Most MAO inhibitors should be avoided for two weeks before starting this treatment. When should you start or stop taking this medication? Consult your doctor.

If you're taking any other drowsy medications, such as opioid pain relievers (codeine, hydrocodone), alcohol, marijuana (cannabis), sleep or anxiety medications (alprazolam, lorazepam, zolpidem), muscle relaxants (carisoprodol, cyclobenzaprine), or other antihistamines, tell your doctor or pharmacist (such as cetirizine, diphenhydramine).

All of your medicines (such as allergy or cough-and-cold remedies, as well as diet supplements) should be checked for substances that could impact your blood pressure or induce drowsiness. Inquire with your pharmacist about the safe use of certain products.

Contraindications

Patients who have previously tested positive for guaiphenesin, psedoephedrine, or triprolidine. Within two weeks of stopping monoamine oxidase inhibitor treatment, this medication is contraindicated.

Patients with significant hypertension or coronary artery disease are at a higher risk.

Mode of actions

Triprolidine hydrochloride is an antimuscarinic and mild sedative that is a powerful competitive histamine H1-receptor antagonist.

Pseudoephedrine is an agonist for both adrenergic and noradrenergic receptors. It produces vasoconstriction by directly stimulating the respiratory mucosa's adrenergic receptors. It also causes bronchial relaxation, increased heart rate, and contractility by directly stimulating adrenergic receptors.

Guaifenesin is an expectorant for productive cough that increases the volume and reduces the viscosity of tenacious sputum.

Dosage & Administration

Adult and Children over 12 years: 10 ml (2 teaspoonful) three times a day.
Children 6-12 years: 5 ml (1 teaspoonful) three times a day.
Children 2-5 years: 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoonful) three times a day.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
