Precautions and warnings

Asthma, epilepsy, migraine, heart or kidney problems, cardiovascular disease, stroke or other brain blood vessel disorders, diabetes, high calcium levels, gallbladder disease, and porphyria. Use with caution in children and during breastfeeding.

Side-effects

Drug Interactions

Rifampicin and barbiturates make the body break down drugs faster.
Warning: This may lower the effectiveness of blood-thinning medications, which can be dangerous.

Contraindications

Do not use if you have severe liver problems, breast cancer, blood clots, heart or blood vessel disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding, tumors that depend on estrogen, allergies to this medicine, or if you are pregnant.

Mode of actions

Estrogens help control the release of gonadotropins, luteinising hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone from the pituitary gland by using a negative feedback process. This means that during estrogen replacement therapy, estrogens lower the high levels of these hormones that are often seen in postmenopausal women.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: PO Menopausal vasomotor symptoms 0.45 mg/day, up to 1.25 mg/day. Attempt to discontinue medication at 3-6-mth intervals.
Vulvular and vag atrophy 0.3 mg/day.
Female hypogonadism 0.3-0.625 mg/day in a cyclical regimen. Add progestin treatment once skeletal maturity is achieved.
Female castration; Primary ovarian failure 1.25 mg/day in a cyclical regimen.
Palliation in prostate carcinoma 1.25-2.5 mg 3 times/day.
Osteoporosis prophylaxis in postmenopausal women Initial: 0.3 mg/day in a cyclical or continuous regimen depending on patient's condition.

IV/IM Abnormal uterine bleeding 25 mg, may repeat in 6-12 hr if needed.

Pregnancy & Lactation

FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.

Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.

If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.


There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
