Gabapentin is similar in structure to the brain chemical GABA, but it does not act like GABA or block its effects. Gabapentin mainly binds to certain sites in the brain, which are linked to voltage-gated calcium channels, especially those with the ?-2/?-1 subunit. These channels are mostly found at the ends of nerve cells (presynaptic) and help regulate the release of stimulating neurotransmitters. This process is important because it can affect conditions like epilepsy and the sensation of pain.
