Sodium Hyaluronate Similar medicine
Be careful when giving Sodium Hyaluronate injections to patients who have allergies to bird proteins, feathers, or eggs. Always use a very clean (sterile) technique when giving the injection. If there is fluid in the joint, it should be removed before injecting Sodium Hyaluronate. Use a different syringe for removing joint fluid and for the injection—do not use the same one. After the injection, it is recommended that the patient avoids strenuous exercise or activities that put a lot of weight on the joint, like jogging or playing tennis, for at least 48 hours.
It is not yet known if it is safe or effective to use sodium hyaluronate together with other injections in the joint.
Sodium hyaluronate can react and form a solid when mixed with certain disinfectants, like benzalkonium chloride or chlorhexidine. Therefore, care should be taken to avoid mixing them.
Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to sodium hyaluronate or proteins from birds. Also, do not get injections into a joint if you currently have, or have had, infections or skin problems in the area where the injection would be given.
Sodium hyaluronate is a type of sugar molecule that acts as a lubricant for body tissues. It is commonly used in eye surgeries because, when mixed with water, it creates a thick, gel-like solution. This solution can replace the natural fluids in the eye, making it very useful during these procedures.
Adult: Intra-articular Osteoarthritis of the knee 20-25 mg once wkly for 5 wk, up to 30 mg once wkly for 3-4 wk. Not to repeat course w/in 6 mth for any individual joint.
Sodium Hyaluronate is administered by intra-articular injection. A treatment cycle consists of five injections given at weekly intervals. Some patients may experience benefit with three injections given at weekly intervals. Inject the full 2 ml in one knee only. If treatment is bilateral, a separate injection should be used for each knee.
FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.
Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.
If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.
There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
