Precautions and warnings

People with a history of GI disease, asthma, high blood pressure, heart disease or risk factors, fluid retention, or heart failure should use caution. Monitor patients who have advanced kidney disease. This medicine may affect the ability to drive or use machines. Extra care should be taken with elderly patients. Avoid use during the third trimester of pregnancy and use caution when breastfeeding.

Drug Interactions

Using this medicine with aspirin or warfarin increases the risk of serious stomach and intestinal problems. It can make blood pressure medications like ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers work less effectively. It may also reduce the effectiveness of diuretics like furosemide and thiazide. This medicine can make methotrexate more toxic and raise lithium levels in the blood.

Contraindications

Do not use meloxicam if you are allergic to it, aspirin, or other NSAIDs. Avoid it if you have severe liver problems, bleeding disorders, or kidney failure (unless you are on dialysis). Do not use rectal meloxicam if you have proctitis, hemorrhoids, or rectal bleeding.

Mode of actions

Meloxicam belongs to the oxicam group of drugs and works as a pain reliever, fever reducer, and anti-inflammatory medicine. It works by blocking the COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes in the body, which lowers the production of substances called prostaglandins that cause inflammation, pain, and fever.

Dosage & Administration

Rheumatoid arthritis
Adult: 15 mg daily as a single dose. Patients with increased risk of adverse effects: Initially 7.5 mg.
Elderly: 7.5 mg daily for long-term treatment.

Ankylosing spondylitis
Adult: 15 mg daily as a single dose. Patients with increased risk of adverse effects: Initially 7.5 mg.
Elderly: 7.5 mg daily for long-term treatment.

Acute exacerbations of osteoarthritis
Adult: 7.5 mg daily up to a max of 15 mg as a single dose.
Elderly: 7.5 mg daily.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
Child: >2 yr: 125 mcg/kg ocne daily. Max dose: 7.5 mg daily.

Pregnancy & Lactation

This medicine is not allowed during pregnancy. Do not use it if you are pregnant. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict effective birth control during treatment and for six months after stopping this medicine. If you do become pregnant, stop taking this medicine and discuss your doctor right away.

There is no specific information on whether this medicine passes into breast milk or not. Considering the possible risks for the children, breastfeeding while using this medicine is not recommended and at least two weeks after the last dose. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
