Precautions and warnings
Should be given with caution to patients with hyperoxaluria. Taking too much vitamin C during pregnancy can cause problems for the newborn baby.
Side-effects
- Ascorbic acid does not seem to have any important adverse effects at dosages less than 4 mg/day. Larger dose may cause diarrhoea or formation of renal calculi of calcium oxalate in patients with renal impairment. Ingestion of more than 600 mg daily have a diuretic action.
Drug Interactions
Deferoxamine, hormonal contraceptives, fluphenazine, warfarin, elemental iron, salicylates, warfarin, fluphenazine, disulfiram, mexiletine, and Vitamin B12 can all interact with Vitamin C. While taking this medication, you should exercise extra caution.
Vitamin C insufficiency is common among those who habitually consume alcohol, especially those who also suffer from other ailments. To restore vitamin C levels to normal, these persons may need to be treated for longer than usual.
Vitamin C accumulates in high concentrations in cancerous cells. Only utilize high doses of vitamin C under the supervision of your oncologist until further information becomes available.
Long-term renal disease has been linked to an increased risk of vitamin C insufficiency. In some persons, vitamin C supplementation may increase the quantity of oxalate in their urine. In those with kidney disease, too much oxalate in the urine can raise the chance of kidney failure.
Kidney stones: Taking a lot of vitamin C can make you more likely to have kidney stones. Vitamin C should not be used in amounts higher than those seen in basic multivitamins.
Tobacco use, including smoking and chewing, depletes vitamin C levels. Those who smoke or chew tobacco should increase their vitamin C intake.
Contraindications
Vitamin C is a necessary nutrient that must be included in one's diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly citrus fruits, are good sources.
Vitamin C is required for normal bodily development and function. It has a significant impact on immunological function. Rather than using supplements, most experts advocate acquiring vitamin C through food. Fresh oranges and freshly squeezed orange juice are excellent sources of vitamin C.
Vitamin C has traditionally been used to prevent and treat scurvy. The most prevalent application of vitamin C today is to prevent and treat the common cold. It's also claimed to treat autism, breast cancer, heart disease, and a variety of other ailments, though there's little scientific evidence to back up many of these claims. In addition, there is no good evidence to support the use of vitamin C for COVID-19.
Mode of actions
Vitamin C is required for collagen synthesis and tissue repair, and it also plays a role in oxidation/reduction reactions and other metabolic pathways such as the creation of catecholamines, carnitine, and steroids. It also aids in the conversion of folic acid to folinic acid.
Dosage & Administration
Oral
Scurvy
Adult: Prevention: 25-75 mg daily. 4 tablets 2 to 3 times daily. Treatment: >250 mg daily, given in divided doses. May also be given via IM/IV/SC admin. 250-500mg IV qDay/BID for at least 2 weeks.
Child: 1 mth-4 yr: 125-250 mg daily; 4-12 yr: 250-500 mg daily; 12-18 yr: 500 mg-1 g daily. Doses to be given in 1-2 divided doses.
Thalassaemia
Adult: 100-200 mg daily, to be given with desferrioxamine.
Child: 100-200 mg daily, to be given with desferrioxamine.
Metabolic disorders
Child: Neonate: 50-200 mg daily, adjust if needed; 1 mth-18 yr: 200-400 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses, up to 1 g daily may be needed.
Adult:
Common cold: 1 gm or more daily in divided doses, i.e. 4 tablets daily.
In wound healing: 2-4 tablets 2 to 3 times daily
In other conditions: 1-2 tablets daily
Children: < 4 years: 1/4 adult dose, 4-12 years: 1/2 of the adult dose.
1 effervescent tablet daily with a meal or as directed by physician. Dissolve one tablet in half glass (100 ml) of water and drink instantly.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Adequate and well-controlled human studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy and there is not enough evidence of risk in later trimesters.
