Be careful when using this medicine in people who have a higher risk of muscle problems, such as those over 65 years old, those with kidney problems, or those with untreated or poorly managed hypothyroidism. Extra caution should also be taken if the person has kidney issues, is elderly, or is taking this medicine along with fibrates or high doses of niacin, which are other cholesterol-lowering drugs.
Older adults may be more sensitive to pitavastatin.
The safety and effectiveness of this medicine have not been established in children.
Erythromycin and rifampicin can increase how much pitavastatin your body absorbs. The risk of muscle problems (like myopathy or rhabdomyolysis) goes up if you take pitavastatin with gemfibrozil, colchicine, niacin, or other fibrates.
Warning: Ciclosporin can greatly raise pitavastatin levels in your body, which could be very dangerous.
This product should not be used by patients who are allergic to any of its ingredients. Pitavastatin must not be taken by people who have active liver disease, including those with unexplained and ongoing high levels of liver enzymes.
HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors work by blocking the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is needed for the body to make cholesterol. By competing with this enzyme, they slow down the main step in cholesterol production.
The dose range for Pitavastatin is 1 to 4 mg orally once daily at any time of the day with or without food. The recommended starting dose is 2 mg and the maximum dose is 4 mg.
The starting dose and maintenance doses of Pitavastatin should be individualized according to patient characteristics, such as goal of therapy and response.
This medicine must not be used during pregnancy. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict two effective types of birth control starting one month before and during treatment and for three years after stopping this medicine. Discuss with your doctors if you are not sure which types of birth control are effective for you. You must need to take pregnancy tests regularly during your treatment with this medicine and for at least three years after taking this medicine. If it seems that you do become pregnant stop taking this medicine and call your doctor immediately. If you really become pregnant, miss a menstrual period, or have sex without using two forms of birth control. In some cases, your doctor can prescribe emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy. People on this medicine should not donate blood during the treatment and for three years afterward.
This medicine is also contraindicated breast milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended while using this medication and for three years afterward.
