Drug Interactions

Taking valsartan with other blood pressure medications can make its effect stronger. If you use valsartan with potassium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics, salt substitutes with potassium, or other drugs that affect potassium (such as heparin, ciclosporin, certain birth control pills, amphotericin, steroids, or carbenoxolone), your potassium levels may become too high, so you should have them checked often.

Taking NSAIDs (like ibuprofen or naproxen) with valsartan can make it less effective in lowering blood pressure and may raise the risk of kidney problems. Valsartan can also decrease how well your body gets rid of some chemotherapy drugs, such as cyclophosphamide or methotrexate. If you take vitamin D or calcium supplements, you could end up with high calcium levels.

**Serious risks:**
Valsartan can increase lithium levels, which can be dangerous, so your doctor should check your lithium levels regularly if you take both medicines. It can also increase the risk of a serious heart rhythm problem if taken with dofetilide, so you should not use these together.

Contraindications

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to valsartan, hydrochlorothiazide, or sulfonamides. It should also not be used in people with severe liver problems or very poor kidney function.

Mode of actions

Valsartan lowers blood pressure by blocking the effects of a chemical called angiotensin II, which normally makes blood vessels tighten and causes the body to hold onto salt and water. Hydrochlorothiazide is a type of medicine called a diuretic, or “water pill,” that helps your body get rid of extra water and salt.
