Precautions and warnings

Watch for ulcers and bleeding in patients who take this medication for a long time. Be especially careful if the patient has a history of serious stomach or intestinal problems, drinks alcohol, smokes, or has other risks for peptic ulcers. People who are elderly, weak, have uncontrolled heart failure, high blood pressure, heart problems, are on long-term water pills, or have conditions that cause fluid retention also need special attention. Use caution in patients with kidney or liver problems. Be careful in patients with bleeding disorders or those having surgeries that require careful control of bleeding. Do not use this medication in the third trimester of pregnancy, and avoid it during breastfeeding.

  • severe hepatic reactions.

Drug Interactions

There is a higher chance of salicylate poisoning when taking aspirin. This medicine can make the effects of oral blood thinners stronger. It may make beta-blockers, diuretics, and other medications for high blood pressure less effective. It can also increase the risk of toxicity from methotrexate and lithium.

Contraindications

A history of peptic ulcers (past or present) or allergy to NSAIDs. Also, do not use for pain around the time of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

Mode of actions

Oxaprozin is a type of NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) that comes from propionic acid. It works by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase, which stops the production of prostaglandins—chemicals in the body that cause pain and inflammation.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: PO Osteoarthritis 1.2 g once daily. Patients w/ low body wt or mild disease: Initial: 600 mg once daily. Max: 1.8 g or 26 mg/kg (whichever is lower) in divided doses.

Rheumatoid arthritis 1.2 g once daily. Max: 1.8 g or 26 mg/kg (whichever is lower) in divided doses.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
Child: >6 yr: Wt 22-31 kg: 600 mg; 32-54 kg: 900 mg; >55 kg: 1200 mg. All doses to be given once daily.

Pregnancy & Lactation

This medicine is not allowed during pregnancy. Do not use it if you are pregnant. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict effective birth control during treatment and for six months after stopping this medicine. If you do become pregnant, stop taking this medicine and discuss your doctor right away.

There is no specific information on whether this medicine passes into breast milk or not. Considering the possible risks for the children, breastfeeding while using this medicine is not recommended and at least two weeks after the last dose. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
