Drug Interactions
Antibiotic absorption is reduced by antacids and supplements containing iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, or zinc. Taking these drugs together may raise the levels of lithium, digoxin, halofantrine, and theophylline, but lower the amount of atovaquone in your body. Using this medication may also increase the risk of ergot poisoning when taken with ergot drugs, and make birth control pills less effective.
Serious Risks:
- This medicine can interfere with blood thinners (anticoagulants), potentially causing dangerous effects.
- It can damage the kidneys, especially if taken with diuretics, methoxyflurane, or other drugs harmful to the kidneys. Do not use it with drugs that are toxic to the liver.
- Taking it with retinoids can increase the risk of a rare condition called benign intracranial hypertension (increased pressure inside the head).

Mode of actions
Oxytetracycline attaches temporarily to the 30S and possibly the 50S parts of bacterial ribosomes. This action stops bacteria from making proteins and slows their growth. It works against many types of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Dosage & Administration
Adult: PO Susceptible infections 250-500 mg 4 times/day. Max: 4 g/day. Acne 250-500 mg twice daily. Uncomplicated gonorrhoea Initial: 1.5 g, then 0.5 g 4 times/day, up to a total of 9 g/treatment course.
IM Susceptible infections 250 mg once daily.
Pregnancy & Lactation
This medicine is not allowed during pregnancy. Do not use it if you are pregnant. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict effective birth control during treatment and for six months after stopping this medicine. If you do become pregnant, stop taking this medicine and discuss your doctor right away.
There is no specific information on whether this medicine passes into breast milk or not. Considering the possible risks for the children, breastfeeding while using this medicine is not recommended and at least two weeks after the last dose. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
