Roflumilast is not a bronchodilator and should not be used to treat sudden breathing problems. Patients taking Roflumilast should have their weight checked regularly. If they lose weight for no clear reason or lose a lot of weight, the doctor should investigate, and stopping Roflumilast may be necessary. Use Roflumilast carefully in patients who have serious immune system diseases (like HIV, multiple sclerosis, lupus, or progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy), serious infections (like tuberculosis or acute hepatitis), cancer (except for basal-cell carcinoma), or severe heart problems.
Erythromycin, ketoconazole, fluvoxamine, enoxacin, and cimetidine are some medications. Others include rifampicin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, phenytoin, theophylline, and oral contraceptives (OC).
Roflumilast should not be used by people who are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. It also should not be taken by anyone with moderate to severe liver problems.
A selective phosphodiesterase (PDE)-4 inhibitor works by blocking the action of PDE-4. This causes the levels of a molecule called cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) to increase inside lung cells. This increase in cAMP is believed to be how the drug produces its effects.
In adults (above 18 years of age), the recommended dose of Roflumilast is one 500 microgram (mcg) tablet per day with or without food for both asthma and COPD.
As there is lack of safety information of this drug in children so, it should be avoided in children and adolescent under 18 years of age.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
