Drug Interactions
Magaldrate can affect how certain drugs, such as tetracyclines, benzodiazepines, and indomethacin, work in your body. Using magaldrate in high doses or for a long time may cause you to have more frequent bowel movements and make your stool softer or more watery. Sometimes, it can also change how your digestive system works, leading to constipation or diarrhea in some people.
Contraindications
Magaldrate should not be used by people who are allergic to magnesium or aluminum. It is also not safe for people who have kidney problems.
Mode of actions
Magaldrate is a compound made of magnesium and aluminum. When it enters the stomach, it quickly turns into magnesium and aluminum hydroxide in the stomach acid. These substances are not well absorbed into the body, so they work for a longer time to reduce stomach acid. Magaldrate also helps balance how quickly food moves through the intestines, strengthens the muscle at the end of the esophagus to prevent acid reflux, and slows down stomach emptying.
Simethicone helps gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines join together, making it easier for gas to pass out of the body.
Dosage & Administration
Suspension: 2-4 teaspoonfuls after 20-60 minutes of meal and before sleep or on the basis of physician’s prescription.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
