Precautions and warnings

A large study involving asthma patients showed that long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonists can increase the risk of dying from asthma. There is no evidence yet showing if these drugs also raise the risk of death in people with COPD.

In a 28-week study in the US, patients with asthma were given either salmeterol (a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist) or a placebo, along with their regular asthma treatment. More people died from asthma in the group taking salmeterol (13 out of 13,176) compared to the placebo group (3 out of 13,179). This means the risk of asthma-related death was higher with salmeterol. This risk is thought to apply to all long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonists, not just salmeterol.

So far, no studies have clearly shown if this risk is also increased with [drug name], and its safety and effectiveness in asthma patients have not been proven. Therefore, [drug name] is not recommended for treating asthma.

Serious asthma problems, including death, have been reported with these medicines, but existing studies are too small to accurately compare the rates of these serious events between different treatments.

Drug Interactions

The risk of side effects increases if this medication is used with other drugs that stimulate the nervous system (sympathomimetics). There is also a chance of low potassium levels if you take it together with certain medicines like methylxanthine derivatives, steroids, or diuretics that don’t spare potassium. Be careful using it with other long-acting beta-2 agonists or products that contain them. Also, drugs that block CYP3A4 or P-gp enzymes can slow down how indacaterol is removed from the body.

Contraindications

People with asthma who are not taking a long-term asthma control medicine
People who have had allergic reactions to indacaterol or any of its ingredients

Mode of actions

Indacaterol is a long-acting medicine that helps open up the airways in the lungs (a bronchodilator) when it is inhaled. It works by activating a process inside cells that increases a substance called cyclic AMP. Higher levels of cyclic AMP cause the muscles around the airways to relax, making it easier to breathe. Studies in the lab show that indacaterol targets beta2-receptors in the lungs much more strongly than beta1-receptors (over 24 times more), which is similar to how formoterol works.

Dosage & Administration

The recommended dosage is the once-daily inhalation of the contents of one 75 mcg capsule using the inhaler.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
