Doxycycline may impair the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccinations such as the typhoid vaccine. Before getting any vaccines or vaccinations, inform your doctor that you are taking doxycycline.
This drug could make you more sun-sensitive. Spend as little time as possible in the sun. Sunlamps and tanning booths should be avoided. When you're outside, use sunscreen and wear protective gear. If you get sunburned or see blisters or redness on your skin, call your doctor right once.
Doxycycline's negative effects, particularly tooth discolouration, may be more sensitive in children under the age of eight. Older children and young adults have also experienced tooth discolouration. Consult your doctor about the dangers and advantages of this drug.
Retinoids (such as acitretin, isotretinoin), barbiturates (such as phenobarbital), "blood thinners" (such as warfarin), digoxin, anti-seizure drugs (such as phenytoin), and strontium are some of the items that may interact with this drug.
It is not recommended for those who have a history of tetracycline hypersensitivity. It's also not recommended for people with severe liver disease or systemic lupus erythematosus. Alkalis, antacids, and iron taken at the same time may interfere with Doxycycline absorption. It's best to avoid using doxycycline in combination with penicillin. Doxycycline should not be given to pregnant women unless the doctor believes it is absolutely necessary for the patient's health.
Doxycycline binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, which suppresses bacterial protein synthesis. It displays bacteriostatic activity against a wide spectrum of bacteria, both gm+ve and gm-ve.
Adults: Two capsules at a time or one capsule every 12 hours for the first day followed by one capsule per day.
Children: Over 8 years or weighing 45 Kg or less: 4.4 mg/Kg on the first day followed by 2.2 mg/Kg daily.
Acute gonococcal urethritis: 1 capsule twice daily for 2 to 4 days in male and until a cure has been obtained in female.
Chlamydial infections: 1 capsule twice daily for 7 days.
Syphilis: 3 capsules in divided doses for 10 days.
This medicine is not allowed during pregnancy. Do not use it if you are pregnant. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict effective birth control during treatment and for six months after stopping this medicine. If you do become pregnant, stop taking this medicine and discuss your doctor right away.
There is no specific information on whether this medicine passes into breast milk or not. Considering the possible risks for the children, breastfeeding while using this medicine is not recommended and at least two weeks after the last dose. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
