To avoid stimulating the lining of the uterus, do not take more than 8 mg per day, and do not use this maximum dose for more than a few weeks. As with all hormone replacement therapies, you should have a medical checkup once a year. If you have a vaginal infection, you should also receive the appropriate treatment at the same time. Patients who have any of the following conditions should be closely monitored: blood clots (thrombosis), severe liver problems, porphyria, or a history—either during pregnancy or while using steroids—of severe itching, liver-related jaundice, a type of pregnancy rash (herpes gestationis), or a condition called otosclerosis.
The effectiveness of this medicine may be reduced if taken with activated charcoal, barbiturates, carbamazepine, griseofulvin, hydantoin, or rifampicin. It may also affect how well oral anticoagulants work. Additionally, it can increase the effects of succinylcholine, theophyllines, and troleandromycin.
- Pregnancy
- History of breast cancer, or if breast cancer is suspected
- Known or suspected cancer that depends on estrogen, such as endometrial (uterine) cancer
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding
- Untreated thickening of the uterine lining (endometrial hyperplasia)
- Past or current blood clots in deep veins (like deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolism)
- Ongoing or recent serious heart or artery problems, such as angina or a heart attack
- Active liver disease, or a history of liver problems if liver tests are still not normal
Estriol is a natural form of estrogen. It helps restore the normal lining of the vagina. It is believed to have a mild effect on the growth of the uterine lining (endometrium). Estriol stays in the cell nuclei of the endometrium for only a short time.
Adult: PO Menopausal HRT 0.5-3 mg/day for 1 mth, then 0.5-1 mg/day.
Diagnostic aid in atrophic cervical smear: 2-4 mg/day for 7 days before taking the next smear.
Infertility due to cervical hostility: 0.25-1 mg/day on days 6-15 of the menstrual cycle.
Atrophy of the lower urogenital tract related to oestrogen deficiency: 4-8 mg/day for the 1st wk, then taper down to 1-2 mg/day.
Vag Menopausal atrophic vaginitis: As cream (0.01 or 0.1%) or pessary (500 mcg): Apply 500 mcg once daily, reduce to twice wkly subsequently.
Pre- and postoperative therapy in postmenopausal women undergoing vaginal surgery: 4-8mg per day in the 2 weeks before surgery; 1-2mg per day in the 2 weeks after surgery.
Climacteric complaints such as hot flushes and night sweating: 4-8mg per day during the first weeks, followed by a gradual reduction. The lowest effective dosage should be used.
This medicine must not be used during pregnancy. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict two effective types of birth control starting one month before and during treatment and for three years after stopping this medicine. Discuss with your doctors if you are not sure which types of birth control are effective for you. You must need to take pregnancy tests regularly during your treatment with this medicine and for at least three years after taking this medicine. If it seems that you do become pregnant stop taking this medicine and call your doctor immediately. If you really become pregnant, miss a menstrual period, or have sex without using two forms of birth control. In some cases, your doctor can prescribe emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy. People on this medicine should not donate blood during the treatment and for three years afterward.
This medicine is also contraindicated breast milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended while using this medication and for three years afterward.
