The placenta may become trapped if this medication is given during the 2nd or 3rd stage of labor before the placenta has been delivered, so only a trained professional should administer it in this situation. Do not use it for a long time. Use with caution if the patient has sepsis, liver, or kidney problems, or is breastfeeding.
High blood pressure, eclampsia or a history of high blood pressure, heart disease, venoatrial shunts, narrowing of the mitral valve, and severe blood vessel disease are conditions where caution is needed. Do not use this medicine if there is a risk of miscarriage or during pregnancy.
Ergometrine works by making the muscles of the uterus contract. When given in low doses, it increases how often and how strongly the uterus contracts. At higher doses, it makes the uterus stay more tightly contracted overall. Ergometrine also narrows blood vessels in other parts of the body, including those in the brain and limbs.
Oral:
Prophylaxis of postpartum haemorrhage
Adult: 200 mcg 3-4 times daily in the puerperium for 2-7 days.
Intramuscular
Treatment and prophylaxis of postpartum and postabortal haemorrhage
Adult: 200 mcg. May repeat every 2-4 hr. Max: 5 doses.
Intravenous
Treatment and prophylaxis of postpartum and postabortal haemorrhage
Adult: As an emergency measure: 200 mcg by slow inj over at least 1 minute, may repeat every 2-4 hr, up to a max of 5 doses.
This medicine must not be used during pregnancy. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict two effective types of birth control starting one month before and during treatment and for three years after stopping this medicine. Discuss with your doctors if you are not sure which types of birth control are effective for you. You must need to take pregnancy tests regularly during your treatment with this medicine and for at least three years after taking this medicine. If it seems that you do become pregnant stop taking this medicine and call your doctor immediately. If you really become pregnant, miss a menstrual period, or have sex without using two forms of birth control. In some cases, your doctor can prescribe emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy. People on this medicine should not donate blood during the treatment and for three years afterward.
This medicine is also contraindicated breast milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended while using this medication and for three years afterward.
