Drug Interactions

**The blood pressure-lowering effect of clonidine can be increased if used with diuretics or vasodilators. However, its effects can be reduced by antidepressants (TCAs) and other drugs that act on alpha receptors in the brain. Clonidine may increase the risk of side effects from digitalis or lithium, and it may reduce the effectiveness of oral diabetes medicines.**

**Potentially Dangerous:**
Taking clonidine with sleeping pills, antihistamines, or alcohol may cause extreme drowsiness. Stopping clonidine suddenly in people taking non-cardioselective beta-blockers can cause blood pressure to rise sharply. Serious low blood pressure can also happen if clonidine is taken together with chlorpromazine or haloperidol.

Contraindications

Allergies to this medication. Problems with heart rhythm or the heart’s electrical system. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Mode of actions

Clonidine works by activating alpha-2 receptors in the brain stem. This action lowers the activity of the sympathetic nervous system, which then reduces resistance in blood vessels. As a result, blood pressure and heart rate go down. When used at the recommended doses, clonidine does not affect the normal blood flow changes that happen during exercise.
