This medication may make it harder to do skilled tasks or perform dangerous activities. Use with caution in older adults, people with kidney or liver problems, those who consume alcohol, and people who are overweight. If you need to stop taking it, reduce the dose slowly rather than stopping suddenly.
Clobazam is cleared from the liver faster when taken with phenytoin, phenobarbital, or carbamazepine. On the other hand, cimetidine can raise the levels of clobazam in the body.
Warning: Taking clobazam with alcohol, sleeping pills, or sedative antidepressants can greatly increase the risk of serious side effects affecting the brain and nervous system.
Do not use if you are allergic to the medication, have a history of drug addiction, or have myasthenia gravis. Avoid during the first trimester of pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Do not use if you have severe liver problems, sleep apnea, or breathing difficulties.
Clobazam attaches to certain GABA receptors in different parts of the central nervous system, such as the limbic system and reticular formation. This causes more chloride ions to enter nerve cells, which increases GABA's calming effect. As a result, the nerve cells become more stable and less likely to be activated.
