**Fleet phospho-soda must always be mixed with water before you take it. It’s very important to drink plenty of fluids both while taking this medicine and after your procedure to prevent dehydration.**
After you take a dose of Fleet phospho-soda, you should always be near a bathroom because you may have loose bowel movements within 30 minutes. If you don’t have a bowel movement within 6 hours of your first dose, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor right away.
**Instructions for OsmoPrep Tablets:**
- Take each 4-tablet dose with 8 ounces (about one cup) of clear liquids.
- In total, you should drink 2 quarts (about 8 cups) of clear liquids as part of this preparation.
Not drinking enough fluids while using this medicine can lead to dangerous fluid loss and dehydration. This risk is higher if you vomit, don’t drink enough, or are taking water pills (diuretics).
Taking sodium phosphate products before a colonoscopy can sometimes cause serious health problems, including death. These may happen because of large shifts in body fluids, severe changes in body salts, or heart problems. This is most likely in people with kidney problems, a hole in the bowel, or those who use too much of the medicine. That’s why it’s very important to stay well-hydrated before, during, and after using OsmoPrep.
**Warning:**
Extra care should be taken if you have any of the following: severe kidney problems, heart failure, fluid buildup in the stomach (ascites), unstable chest pain (angina), slow stomach emptying, blocked or paralyzed bowel, very bad constipation, bowel perforation, severe bowel inflammation, enlarged or toxic colon, or if you’ve had stomach or bowel surgery.
Do not use in patients who are allergic or sensitive to sodium phosphate salts or any of its ingredients.
Sodium phosphate is used to treat low levels of phosphate in the blood (hypophosphataemia). When taken by mouth in a diluted form or given as a rectal treatment, it works as a gentle laxative. Stronger oral solutions or phosphate enemas are often used to clean out the bowels before surgeries or endoscopy procedures.
It should be prepared when needed by diluting the contents of one bottle of the medicine (45ml) in half a glass (120ml) of cold water. Take first dose of Fleet phospho-soda followed by at least one full glass (240ml) of cold water. Take the second dose of Fleet phospho-soda after 12 hours, followed by at least one full glass (240ml) of cold water. Drink more water or clear liquids if you want to, up to midnight.
The recommended dose as Tablets for colon cleansing for adult patients is 32 tablets (48 grams of sodium phosphate) taken orally with a total of 2 quarts of clear liquids in the following manner:
The evening before the colonoscopy procedure: Take 4 Tablets with 8 ounces of clear liquids every 15 minutes for a total of 20 tablets.
On the day of the colonoscopy procedure: Starting 3-5 hours before the procedure, take 4 Tablets with 8 ounces of clear liquids every 15 minutes for a total of 12 tablets.
FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.
Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.
If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.
There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
