Esomeprazole is a drug that works similarly to omeprazole. While taking esomeprazole, avoid taking any drugs that contain omeprazole.
Esomeprazole Increased risk of digoxin-induced cardiotoxicity, risk of hypomagnesemia with diuretics, INR and prothrombin time with warfarin, tacrolimus, saquinavir, and methotrexate serum concentrations.
Esomeprazole can prevent medications metabolized by CYP2C19 from being eliminated (for example, diazepam). Ketoconazole, erlotinib, and Fe salts' bioavailability may be reduced.
Rilpivirine, atazanavir, and nelfinavir serum concentrations and pharmacological effects may be reduced. Clopidogrel's antiplatelet effects may be reduced.
Patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation or substituted Benzimidazoles should not use esomeprazole.
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that inhibits H+/K+ ATPase in the gastric parietal cell, suppressing gastric acid output. It's the omeprazole S-isomer.
Adult: PO: Erosive oesophagitis: 40 mg once daily for 4 wk, up to 8 wk if needed. Maintenance: 20 mg/day.
Peptic ulcer: 20 mg twice daily for 7 days. NSAID-associated ulceration 20 mg once daily for 4-8 wk.
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome Initial: 40 mg twice daily. Usual range: 80-160 mg/day.
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease: 20 mg once daily for 4 wk. The majority of patients are healed within 4 to 8 weeks. For patients who do not heal after 4-8 weeks, an additional 4-8 weeks of treatment may be considered. Delayed release tablet/capsule should be swallowed whole and taken at least one hour before eating.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
