Seizures are more likely to occur in people with certain conditions, such as existing seizure disorders, heart problems (like irregular heartbeat and risk factors for heart disease), kidney or liver problems, old age, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Taking this medicine at the same time as ergotamine or similar drugs can increase the risk of serious blood vessel spasms.
Potentially fatal: There is a higher risk of a dangerous condition called serotonin syndrome if this medicine is taken with SSRIs, MAOIs, or within 14 days of stopping MAOIs. It is also dangerous to take this medicine if ergotamine or similar drugs have been used in the last 24 hours.
Do not use this medicine to prevent migraines, or in people with basilar, hemiplegic, or ophthalmoplegic migraines. It should also not be used in patients with a history of heart attack or stroke, severe liver problems, heart disease caused by poor blood flow, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or peripheral vascular disease. People who are allergic to sulfonamides should also avoid this medicine.
Sumatriptan is a medicine that works by activating certain serotonin (5-HT1) receptors. It helps by narrowing blood vessels in the brain and reducing inflammation in the nervous system. It can also slightly slow down how quickly your stomach empties.
Adult: PO Migraine >18 yr: 50-100 mg, repeat 2 hrly if migraine recurs. Max: 300 mg/24 hr.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
