Use with caution in people who have moderate to severe kidney or liver problems. Avoid in conditions that can get worse if the heart rate increases. Be careful if the person has a history of heart attack, bleeding problems, epilepsy, hypomania or mania. Do not use if there is high eye pressure, or risk of angle-closure glaucoma. This medication may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. Regularly check blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Watch patients closely in the early stages of treatment for depression, as there is an increased risk of suicide. Do not stop the medication suddenly; gradually reduce the dose over 1-2 weeks and look out for withdrawal symptoms such as tiredness, headache, nausea, vomiting, or heart palpitations. Stop the medication if seizures occur or get worse. Use caution in elderly patients and during pregnancy.
There is a higher chance of serotonin syndrome when this medication is taken with TCAs, SSRIs, SNRIs, lithium, sibutramine, or tramadol. Medicines that block CYP3A4 (such as ketoconazole, atazanavir, and clarithromycin) can increase the amount of this medication in your body. It can also raise the levels of haloperidol, but might lower the levels of indinavir. The risk of bleeding may go up if taken with aspirin, NSAIDs, warfarin, or other blood thinners.
Serious Warning: Taking this medication with MAOIs, linezolid, or methylene blue can cause a dangerous reaction called serotonin syndrome.
Venlafaxine and its active form, O-desmethylvenlafaxine, work by blocking the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, and they also slightly affect dopamine. They have little effect on muscarinic, histamine, or ?1-adrenergic receptors. Venlafaxine is about as effective as other common antidepressants, but it tends to cause fewer side effects like dry mouth, drowsiness, and heart-related problems.
Adult: PO Depression Initial: 75 mg/day in 2-3 divided doses, increase slowly if needed. Max: 375 mg/day.
Anxiety; Social anxiety disorder Extended release Initial: 75 mg once daily, may increase slowly if needed. Max: 225 mg/day.
Panic disorder 37.5 mg once daily for 1st 7 days, may increase slowly if needed. Max: 225 mg/day.
Hepatic impairment: Mild to moderate: Reduce dose by 50%.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
