Precautions and warnings
Be cautious when giving this medicine to people at risk of having too much iron in their bodies, such as those with haemochromatosis, haemolytic anemia, or red cell aplasia. Iron can bind to tetracycline, which may reduce how well it is absorbed.
Side-effects
- Generally well tolerated. However
- a few allergic reactions may be seen.
Drug Interactions
**Carbonyl iron:** Taking antacids can lower how much carbonyl iron your body absorbs.
**Folic acid:** Some medicines—like antiepileptics, oral contraceptives, anti-tuberculosis drugs, alcohol, aminopterin, methotrexate, pyrimethamine, trimethoprim, and sulfonamides—can reduce the amount of folic acid in your blood. Folic acid can also lower the blood level of phenytoin.
**Vitamin C:** The following drugs may interact with vitamin C: deferoxamine, hormonal birth control, fluphenazine, warfarin, iron supplements, aspirin and other salicylates, disulfiram, mexiletine, and vitamin B12.
Contraindications
Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.
Mode of actions
**Iron:** Iron is needed for your body to make hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in your blood. It is also important for making red blood cells and acts as a helper for many important enzymes, such as cytochromes, which are involved in producing energy. Iron is stored in hemoglobin, myoglobin, and enzymes, and helps transport oxygen throughout the body.
**Folic Acid:** Folic acid helps your body make DNA and supports the production of healthy red blood cells. In the liver and blood, it is changed into its active form, tetrahydrofolic acid. Folic acid is also important for preventing birth defects in pregnant women, so higher amounts are needed during pregnancy.
**Zinc:** Zinc is involved in over 100 different enzymes, helps your body make DNA, and keeps your immune system strong. It is also important for your senses of taste and smell and may help insulin work properly.
**Vitamin B group:** B vitamins are important for many processes, including breaking down fats and carbohydrates, making energy, tissue health, and removing certain types of fats from the blood. Vitamin B12, in particular, is needed for making red blood cells, healthy nerves, cell growth, and DNA. To absorb it from food, your stomach makes a protein called intrinsic factor. B vitamins also help with energy production and the conversion of some nutrients, like turning tryptophan into niacin.
**Vitamin C:** Vitamin C is essential for building collagen, which helps repair tissues. It is involved in making certain chemicals (like catecholamines, carnitine, and steroids), supports many body reactions, and helps change folic acid into its active form.
Dosage & Administration
One capsule daily. In more severe cases, 2 capsules a day may be required or as directed by the physician.
Pregnancy & Lactation
FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.
Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.
If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.
There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
