Duolax is indicated for
- Constipation
Precautions and warnings
Oral: Not recommended for people who have trouble swallowing or have developmental disabilities. Do not use for a long time as a laxative or stool softener.
Side-effects
- Anal irritation (excessive dose)
- seepage. Foreign-body granulomatous reactions; vasospasm; lipoid pneumonia; interference with absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
Drug Interactions
It may reduce the body’s ability to absorb fat-soluble vitamins and possibly other substances.
Contraindications
Children may have stomach pain, feel nauseous, and sometimes vomit.
Mode of actions
Paraffin: When taken by mouth, paraffin helps to soften stool by penetrating and loosening it. Magnesium hydroxide works by increasing the movement of the intestines and holding more water in the bowel, which helps you have a bowel movement. In addition, magnesium hydroxide lowers stomach acid by reacting with hydrochloric acid to produce magnesium chloride.
Dosage & Administration
Adult: PO Constipation Up to 45 mL/day. Max duration: 1 wk.
The recommended oral dose are as follows-
Adults:
15-30ml before breakfast or at bedtime.
Children:
Over 7 years: 7.5ml-15ml at bedtime.
3-7 years: 5-10ml at bedtime.
The dose may be mixed with milk or half a glass of water if desired.
Pregnancy & Lactation
FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.
Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.
If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.
There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
