Precautions and warnings
Children, pregnant or breastfeeding women should use caution. People with cancer or liver problems should also be careful. There is a higher chance of getting infections like community-acquired pneumonia. If you have severe liver problems, do not take more than 20 mg.
Side-effects
- The most frequently occurring adverse events ( >1%) are headache
- diarrhoea
- abdominal pain
- nausea
- flatulence
- dry mouth
- constipation.
Drug Interactions
This medication can increase the risk of heart side effects caused by digoxin. It can also lower magnesium levels in the blood, especially when taken with diuretics. If taken with warfarin, it might raise INR and prothrombin time, making bleeding more likely. It may increase the levels of drugs like tacrolimus, saquinavir, and methotrexate in the body. It can slow down the removal of medicines broken down by CYP2C19, such as diazepam. Also, it might make ketoconazole, erlotinib, and iron supplements less effective.
**Serious Effects:**
It can lower the amount and effects of rilpivirine, atazanavir, and nelfinavir, and may reduce how well clopidogrel prevents blood clots.
Contraindications
Esomeprazole should not be used by people who are allergic to any of its ingredients or to similar medicines called substituted benzimidazoles.
Mode of actions
Esomeprazole is a type of medicine called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It reduces the amount of stomach acid by blocking an enzyme called H+/K+ ATPase in the stomach’s lining. Esomeprazole is the S-isomer form of omeprazole.
Dosage & Administration
IV: Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease 20 or 40 mg once daily for 10 days. Convert to oral therapy as soon as possible.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
