Precautions and warnings
If a patient has symptoms like nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or a swollen belly that may point to a bowel obstruction, the doctor should check and make sure they don’t have this problem before starting treatment. The medication should be mixed with water, juice, soda, coffee, or tea before taking it.
Side-effects
- Nausea
- abdominal bloating
- cramping
- flatulence may occur. High doses may produce diarrhea
- excessive stool frequency
- particularly in elderly nursing home patients. Patients taking other medications containing polyethylene glycol have occasionally developed urticaria suggestive of an allergic reaction.
Contraindications
Polyethylene glycol should not be used in people who have, or may have, a blocked bowel or are allergic to polyethylene glycol.
Mode of actions
Polyethylene glycol works as an osmotic agent, meaning it helps keep water in the stool. It does not affect how the body absorbs or releases glucose or electrolytes.
Dosage & Administration
The usual dose is 17 gm of powder per day (or as directed by physician) in a glass of water, juice, coke, coffee or tea.
Each bottle is supplied with a cup that is used to measure 17 gm or 8.5 gm of laxative powder when filled upto the marked line.
Pregnancy & Lactation
FDA has not yet classified this medicine into a specified pregnancy category. Although there is no enough evidence that taking this medicine during you are pregnant is harmful.
Discuss with your doctor if you are trying to get pregnant while taking this medicine too.
If you do become pregnant while you are taking this medicine, you should continue to take it and contact with your doctors as quickly as possible. They can assist you to decide whether or not to keep taking this medicine. If you abandon taking this medicine and become sick, this would be more pernicious to your child than staying on the medication.
There is no specific information about whether this medicine is passed on to the baby through breast milk. During this medication, if your baby becomes very sleepy, restless, fatigued, exhibit feeding problems, stop breastfeeding and talk to your doctors very quickly.
