This medication can cause fluid and/or salt build-up. Use it carefully in patients with heart failure, severe kidney problems, or any condition that causes the body to retain sodium and develop swelling. Check blood potassium levels regularly. Do not give this medicine in the same line as blood, as it may cause clumping. Be careful in patients with diabetes or those who have trouble processing carbohydrates. There is a risk of low potassium levels when giving strong sugar solutions by IV. Take extra care with children, especially newborns and very low birth weight babies. Use caution if the patient is also taking steroids or corticotropin. Be cautious when giving to pregnant women.
Dextrose and sodium chloride solutions provide the body with important electrolytes, energy (calories), and water to stay hydrated. Sodium and chloride help control the body’s acid-base balance. Dextrose is a type of sugar that gives energy. The body easily uses dextrose, which helps prevent the loss of body protein and nitrogen. It also helps the body store glycogen (a form of energy) and helps stop or prevent ketosis (a condition where the body uses fat for energy instead of sugar).
Adult: IV Dose depends on age, wt and clinical condition of the patient.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
