Precautions and warnings

People who use this medicine might also react to other benzodiazepines. Use caution if you have liver or kidney problems, breathing issues, are elderly, weak, or at risk of falling. Stop using this medication slowly; do not stop suddenly. Be careful if you have porphyria or trouble swallowing. If you have a history of drug abuse or alcoholism, notify your doctor. This medicine can make you drowsy or affect your coordination, so avoid driving or operating machines. If you have heart or blood vessel problems or don’t tolerate changes in blood pressure, be cautious. Use extra care if you have depression or are at risk for suicide.

Drug Interactions

Combining this medicine with other drugs that slow down the central nervous system—such as barbiturates, antipsychotics, sleeping pills, anxiety medications, antidepressants, sedating antihistamines, anticonvulsants, and anesthesia—can increase the sedative effects. Taking it with narcotic painkillers can also increase the risk of dependence. Medicines that block the CYP450 enzyme may make the effects of benzodiazepines stronger.

Contraindications

Not to be used for treating psychosis. Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Mode of actions

Oxazepam is a fast-acting medication from the benzodiazepine group. It works by attaching to specific receptors on nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord (such as the limbic system and reticular formation). This action helps a brain chemical called GABA work better, which increases the flow of chloride ions into nerve cells. As a result, the nerve cells become less active (hyperpolarised), which helps calm the brain and stabilize its activity.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: PO Alcohol withdrawal syndrome; Anxiety 15-30 mg 3-4 times/day. Insomnia associated w/ anxiety 15-25 mg 1 hr before bedtime. Up to 50 mg may be used.

Pregnancy & Lactation

This medicine is not allowed during pregnancy. Do not use it if you are pregnant. It can be absorbed through the skin and lungs caused can damage your unborn child’s organs and cause congenital disabilities. Strict effective birth control during treatment and for six months after stopping this medicine. If you do become pregnant, stop taking this medicine and discuss your doctor right away.

There is no specific information on whether this medicine passes into breast milk or not. Considering the possible risks for the children, breastfeeding while using this medicine is not recommended and at least two weeks after the last dose. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
