Drug Interactions

It helps the body absorb other medications in the digestive system. It makes anthraquinone laxatives work more strongly. When taken with aspirin, it raises the risk of side effects.

Contraindications

Blockage in the intestines or unexplained stomach symptoms. Using for a long period of time. Using at the same time as liquid paraffin.

Mode of actions

Docusate sodium is a type of medicine called an anionic surfactant. It mostly works by helping more fluids mix into the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. It may also increase fluid in the intestines and works both by softening stool and gently stimulating bowel movements.

Dosage & Administration

Oral
Constipation
Adult: 50-500 mg/day in 1-4 divided doses.
Child: 6-12 yr: 40-120 mg/day; 3-6 yr: 20-60 mg/day. To be given in 1-4 divided doses.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
