Precautions and warnings

Do not use if you currently have epilepsy or seizures, especially if not well controlled. Use with caution in people with liver or kidney problems, heart conditions (such as heart rhythm problems, angina, or recent heart attack), low blood pressure, diabetes, mental health issues (such as psychosis or bipolar disorder), or a history of these conditions. Stop treatment if you develop jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). Be careful if you have trouble urinating, narrow-angle glaucoma, or high eye pressure. Patients should be monitored for signs of bone marrow problems and any suicidal thoughts. Do not stop using this medicine suddenly. It may make you drowsy, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery. Use with caution during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in elderly patients.

Drug Interactions

Taking this medication with alcohol or benzodiazepines can make you feel more sleepy. Certain drugs, like strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (for example: HIV-protease inhibitors, antifungal medicines such as ketoconazole, erythromycin, and nefazodone), can increase the amount of this medicine in your blood. Other drugs, such as carbamazepine and other CYP3A4 inducers, can lower its levels. Cimetidine can make your body absorb more of the medication.

Danger: Do not use this drug at the same time as an MAOI, or within two weeks of stopping MAOI treatment. Wait at least one week after stopping mirtazapine before starting any medicine that could cause a dangerous reaction (such as phenelzine).

Contraindications

Mirtazapine Tablets should not be used by people who are allergic to mirtazapine or any of the other ingredients in the tablets.

Mode of actions

Mirtazapine is a type of antidepressant that belongs to the tetracyclic class. It works by blocking certain receptors in the brain (called central presynaptic alpha-2 adrenergic receptors), which increases the activity of the chemicals norepinephrine and serotonin. This helps improve mood.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: PO Initial: The recommended starting dose for (mirtazapine) Tablets is 15 mg/day, administered in a single dose, preferably in the evening prior to sleep. In the treatment of major depressive disorder, the effective dose range was generally 15-45 mg/day as 1-2 divided doses.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.

Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.

This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
