Precautions and warnings
If the patient has previously been treated with tranquilizers that have a sedative effect, these should be gradually avoided.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any medical history you have, especially if you have a personal or family history of bipolar or manic-depressive disorder, a personal or family history of suicide attempts, liver problems, diabetes, low sodium in the blood, dehydration, seizures, stomach ulcers, or a personal or family history of glaucoma.
Side-effects
- In the recommended doses side effects are rare. These could be transient restlessness
- insomnia.
Drug Interactions
TCAs, for example, may enhance the negative effects of antimuscarinic medications. Levodopa's efficacy has been reduced. Dopamine antagonists cause more unpleasant extrapyramidal symptoms (metoclopramide and prochlorperazine).
Potentiates the effects of alcohol, general anesthetics, hypnotics, anxiolytics, and opioids on the central nervous system. Guanethidine's antihypertensive action is blocked.
Antimuscarinics and CNS depressants have additive toxicity. Thyroid hormones may exacerbate the pressor effects of sympathomimetics, and there is a danger of serotonin syndrome when TCA is combined with other antidepressants. It's possible that your diabetes medication dosage will need to be modified.
Contraindications
Following a myocardial infarction, the initial recovery phase, Untreated narrow-angle glaucoma, Defects in bundle-branch conduction Acute intoxication with alcohol, barbiturates, or opiates, Patients who have received an MAO inhibitor within the last two weeks should not be given Flupentixol-Melitracen. Because of its stimulating impact, it is not suggested for excitable or overactive patients, since it may exaggerate these traits.
Mode of actions
Flupentixol is a thioxanthene antipsychotic that blocks postsynaptic dopamine receptors in the CNS, inhibiting dopamine-mediated actions.
Melitracen is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) having anxiolytic effects.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: Usually 2 tablets daily; morning and noon. In severe cases the morning dose may be increased to 2 tablets.
Elderly: 1 tablet in the morning.
Maintenance dose: Usually 1 tablet in the morning. In cases of insomnia or severe restlessness additional treatment with a sedative in the acute phase is recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required despite potential risks.
Mothers with a newborn baby who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may seldom create symptoms including drowsiness, muscle stiffness or shakiness, feeding or breathing troubles, constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms of your baby's particularly during their first month, tell the doctor immediately.
This medicine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding.
