Use with caution in those with overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) or a risk of suicide. The medication may cause mania or psychotic symptoms in some cases. It should be stopped gradually, not suddenly. It can make it unsafe to drive or operate machinery. Use caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and in elderly patients.
MAOIs can make you feel more sleepy if you drink alcohol. They can also make antidiabetic medicines work more strongly. Taking propranolol or risperidone can raise the levels of maprotiline in your body, which can increase the risk of side effects. Using phenothiazines together with these medicines can make seizures more likely.
Existing heart or blood vessel problems, epilepsy, or a tendency to have seizures.
Maprotiline is a type of antidepressant that is closely related to tricyclic antidepressants. It works mainly by blocking the re-uptake of noradrenaline (a brain chemical), allowing more of it to stay active in the brain, which helps improve mood.
Oral
Depression
Adult: As hydrochloride: 25-75 mg daily in 3 divided doses, gradually increased in 25 mg increments at 1-2 wk intervals to 150 mg/day if necessary. Up to 225 mg/day in severely depressed patients.
Elderly: Initial: 25 mg daily. May increase slowly according to response to 50-75 mg daily if needed.
Although animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect even sometimes unable to demonstrate the risk on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, but during pregnancy, this medicine can be used just when definitely required.
